HBO Real Time host Bill Maher made a spoof of a campaign video released by Jewish Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders last month.
Sanders’ video centered around Simon & Garfunkel’s 1968 single America — which Maher said he thinks is because the music duo is “famously Jewish” — and that Sanders was facing a “problem” of running as a Jew in Iowa, a state lacking much diversity.
Maher’s video, released on Friday — ahead of Monday night’s Iowa caucuses — also opens begins with Simon & Garfunkel’s song and narration by someone claiming to be the Democratic candidate saying, “Everywhere I go across this great state I’m asked the same questions over and over: ‘Can a Jew really be president?’ ‘Have you come to take my baby?’ And, ‘Are you Rumpelstiltskin?’”
The remainder of Maher’s video has the narrator naming famous Jews that people are “already comfortable with,” such as celebrity chef Rachael Ray, actress Kate Hudson, “Sexy but Accessible” Paul Rudd, “the Harry Potter Kid,” and “both Iron Man and the Piano Man.”
Actor Shia LeBeouf is called “a mess but still a Jew,” while film director Woody Allen and Albert Einstein are called “OJs: Obvious Jews.”
The clip ends with the narrator saying “Please consider voting for me. I’m Bernie Sanders and…you can do worse.”
