American-British Jewish actor Andrew Garfield is drawing critical acclaim for his portrayal of Christians in two potential Oscar candidate films.
Garfield, who — as reported by The Algemeiner — recently said during an appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show that he was “proud” of his Jewish heritage, plays a devout Seventh-day Adventist combat medic in Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” and a Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.”
In a Showbiz 411 review of “Silence” published on Thursday, film critic Roger Friedman wrote, “Andrew Garfield may win the Oscar for best actor…the movie hinges on Garfield. He’s in almost every scene. And what’s fascinating is that Garfield (who is Jewish in real life by the way) is in the season’s other Christian movie, ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’ But where that movie is hackneyed and dopey with heavy on the nose Catholic imagery, ‘Silence’ is sublime.”
Three months ago, before “Hacksaw Ridge” opened in theaters, Friedman wrote a column about Gibson’s past antisemitic behavior. “Are we supposed to separate the man from his art?,” he asked. “And how does the director’s personal actions color the way we look at the movies? In the case of Gibson, that’s a tough one to call.”
In October, Jimmy Kimmel asked Garfield, “Were you worried about working with [Gibson]? Did you think, ‘Oh my God, what am I getting into here?’”
“No, not at all,” Garfield replied. “I sat with him and I met him, and I got to know him in a real way; in a deep way, without all the noise and the nonsense getting in the way. And I felt good enough to go in.”
